Simple animation with boat and crew.
Here is the 3d model.
This boat is part of a larger experimental project. I wanted to keep things simple and went with a low-poly style, using a combination of flat colours and gradients with simpler textures, I’m really happy with the results.
The next step would be to make more of the project and build it out.
The alien boat is a mash-up of references from tugboats, fishing boats, Jeeps and sci-fi elements inspired by IPs such as Star Wars. Really I just wanted to create something odd!
I got the form of the boat locked in early on, then started to build the rest, experimenting with the placement of tires, boat buoys and cables.
Originally the boat wasn’t going to have a cabin over the bridge controls, however once I tried it in an iteration, it worked and I kept it there.
The the assets were modelled in Maya, the textured Affinity Painter and decals created Affinity Designer. I was originally going to do simple PBR materials, however it was causing issues and delaying the project. I do want to return to that at some point in the future - perhaps during the larger project.
I definitely got carried away on this one, adding in extra assets: tool boxes, kerosine cans, bottles, chains and cables. However, it looks better for it giving the boat a really lived on feel.
I have a soft spot for low-poly style art. Some of the work that influenced me on this were: Synty Studios assets, Ooblets, A State of Mind, AER Memories of Old, The Devil Inside, Bernband, ABZU amongst others.
Next up is the larger project and more than likely a few more iterations.
